What is the difference between system testing and end-to-end testing?

System testing and end-to-end (E2E) testing are both critical phases in the software testing lifecycle, but they serve different purposes and focus on different aspects of the application. Here are the key differences between the two:

System Testing

  • Scope: System testing evaluates the entire system as a whole, ensuring that all components work together as expected. It checks the complete and fully integrated software product.
  • Focus: The primary focus is on verifying the system’s functionality, performance, security, and compliance with specified requirements. It includes testing of user interfaces, APIs, databases, security, and overall system behavior.
  • Environment: Conducted in an environment that closely resembles the production environment to ensure the system works under realistic conditions.
  • Types of Tests: Includes various types of testing such as functional testing, performance testing, security testing, and usability testing.
  • Objective: To validate that the system meets the specified requirements and performs correctly in its entirety.

End-to-End (E2E) Testing

  • Scope: End-to-end testing involves testing the complete flow of an application from start to finish, simulating real-world user scenarios to ensure that the system works as expected in a real user environment.
  • Focus: Focuses on validating the entire application flow, including interactions between different systems and subsystems (e.g., databases, networks, other applications, hardware).
  • Environment: Typically executed in an environment that mimics real-world usage as closely as possible, often involving multiple systems and components.
  • Types of Tests: Often includes testing user interfaces, backend services, integrations with third-party systems, and data flow across various components.
  • Objective: To ensure that the entire application, including all integrated parts, works correctly from the user’s perspective and that all components and systems interact as expected.

  • End-to-End Testing: Ensures that the entire application flow works as intended from start to finish, simulating real user scenarios and interactions across multiple systems and components.
